Being a Jazz Artist
4:45
Grades: 6 - 12

Video Description: Terell Stafford and Tim Warfield have been wowing crowds for years. We wanted to know everything that goes into a live performance and the elements that are essential for a successful live performance of jazz. Stafford’s trumpet and Warfield’s alto sax do most of the talking, but the artists shed light on a profession that requires impeccable timing, precision, and at times humility.

Quick Ideas for Using the Video:

  • Have students respond to Mr. Stafford’s description of how he feels when he begins to perform, his perspective on nerves, and other performance reactions he provides. Are theirs similar or different? What does it mean to them to hear that a professional musician gets nerves when performing?
  • Have students react to Mr. Warfield’s description of the “story” a jazz solo should have. Have students experiment with stories of their own as they practice solos on their instrument.

*Story videos employ a narrative form to highlight a topic, location, or practitioner in the area of study.
